I tried running a Tubescreamer into the JCM800 but it honestly sounded way better just turning the gain on the amp up over using any dirt pedals.

Lots of cool new amps have come along in the last 20 years, and although some of them are very different and highly useful, nothing has really bested the original by any real margin, tonally, if you know how to use it and get the most out of it, IMHO.
